How Long Does a Hardwood Recoat Take to Cure?

The short answer

Cure time depends on the exact finish and job conditions. A floor that feels dry may not be ready for furniture, rugs, cleaning, or heavy traffic. Ask for the selected product’s written schedule. As one example only, Bona Traffic HD’s technical sheet describes approximately three days to full cure; other finishes differ.

Ask for separate milestones

Get instructions for light foot traffic, pets, furniture, rugs, wet cleaning, and normal use. Do not treat the between-coat drying interval as a full-cure time. Plan an alternate route through the home if the restored floor is the only access to bedrooms or exterior doors.

The product and room conditions matter

Temperature, humidity, ventilation, application, and the finish system influence the schedule. Manufacturer times assume specified conditions. A generic online answer cannot confirm that your room meets them. Before work begins, discuss how the space will be kept within the required conditions.

An example is not your project schedule

Bona Traffic HD is cited to show why a named finish matters, not to promise a three-day schedule for every Optimal project or claim it is the finish used on every job. Use the current instructions supplied for the product actually selected, including any separate rug-return restriction.

Plan the handoff

Keep the care instructions with your estimate or project documents. If furniture must return by a fixed date, mention that during the assessment. Ask how furniture will be moved and protected, which cleaner to use, and who to contact if the finish does not appear to be drying as expected.
